Big Sur is a beautiful area of the central California coastline where you can take a scenic drive on Highway 1, the famous, winding 2 lane road that follows along the cliff edges. From redwood forests to waterfalls on the beach, Big Sur is an amazing place for everyone to explore!
Big Sur, California is a large area located on the central coast of California, between Monterey and San Simeon. Big Sur's roughed coastline draws visitors from our the world. From the Santa Lucia Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, there are many parks to visit such as Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, Andrew Molera State Park, and Limekiln State Park to name a few. One can spend the day hiking through the redwood forests, head to the beach for a lovely sunset and camp under the stars. Though the area is a national treasure and a popular tourist destination, it's affected by various geological problems. Earlier this year Big Sur had its largest landslide in recent years, dumping over 1 million tons of dirt onto a quarter-mile stretch of Highway 1 and 250 feet out into the ocean. Since the dirt goes up to 80 feet deep, CalTrans has announced that they will rebuild the road on top of the slide but it will be closed for the remainder of the year. If traveling to Big Sur be sure to read all road alerts to make sure the roads are open to your destination.
I have always loved traveling to Big Sur since I was a kid! I'm inspired by the incredible rocky coastline, with its crisp salt air and tall trees. Over the last few years, I have been lucky enough to camp, hike and enjoy the Big Sur coast on multiple occasions. Camping at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is an amazing experience surrounded by redwood trees and I recommend it to all! I hope my photographs can bring the wonders of Big Sur into one's home.
