Black & White Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
In February, I got to spend a weekend camping in the vast desert of Death Valley National Park. On my last day in the park, I explored the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. They are the largest dunes in Death Valley and quite a popular tourist stop. Endless rows of foot prints mark the golden sand as you walk out into the dunes. The late afternoon light cast strong shadows across the sand, from whole dunes being shaded to the small ripple shadows from the wind blown sand. It gave such depth to the landscape and called for black and white imagery! In such a vast place where you can see for miles in all directions, it's hard to get a sense of the scale. But the lone traveler in the image walking along the top of the dune helps put this into perspective.
