While attending college at Brooks Institute, I had the opportunity to take a documentary class in Hawaii. I spent the 6 weeks visiting 5 of the islands and snorkeling in various reefs. Here is a comparison of Hanauma Bay on Oahu and Barrier Reef on Molokai.
It's quite easy to get here from Honolulu and it's a popular snorkeling location for tourist. This was my first snorkeling outing of the trip and my first experience of a coral reef.
To my disappointment, the reef was barren and stark. Most of the coral seemed dead, covered with algae, and very unhealthy. It was colorless, not anything you would be expecting from what the tourism advertisement described. A few fish swam around in an otherwise lifeless area.
I was able to find a few areas of healthy coral but it was devastating to see the reef in such a state. This was back in 2011 so I hope that it's doing much better now!
It's a stark contrast to Hanauma Bay. The Island of Molokai is not a popular stay for tourist. Being offshore, one must be taken out to the reef by boat, so it was just my dive buddy and me on our snorkeling trip.
The reef was abundant in life. The vibrant colors of the coral and the ocean fill your view. There was such a diversity in the types of coral, I had never seen anything like it before! The most beautiful was the bright purple corals patched across the reef. Larger schools of fish swam below me as I snorkeled around the reef.
A Sea turtle that was sleeping on the reef floor swims over to take a curious look at me. This magical place seemed untouched and was exactly what I imagined snorkeling on a reef would be like.
Overall, snorkeling in Hawaii was amazing and I cannot wait to visit again.
